What to do in Weihai City

Located at the easternmost tip of the Shandong Peninsula and surrounded by the sea on three sides, Weihai is the closest coastal city in mainland China to Japan and South Korea. Established as Weihaiwei during the Ming Dynasty, the city’s name literally translates to “awe-inspiring the coastal frontiers.” It is the birthplace of the Beiyang Fleet and a crucial site of the First Sino-Japanese War, with Liugong Island standing as a testament to a century of coastal defense history.

Blessed with a superior ecological environment and a comfortable climate, Weihai has been awarded numerous accolades, including the UN Habitat Scroll of Honour Award and the title of National Sanitary City. The city boasts picturesque landscapes where mountains meet the sea, featuring a long, high-quality coastline and several national-level bays.

As a frontier of China’s opening-up, Weihai maintains frequent exchanges with South Korea. It is a hub for marine industries, high-end manufacturing, as well as scientific and educational resources. Ideal for living, tourism, business, and research, Weihai is truly an exquisite and renowned coastal city.
